| WUSHU
KUNG FU BOTH TERMS REFER TO MARTIAL ARTS SKILLS Wushu is taught for body development and reaction skills. Wushu translates to English as “martial art” or “war art” and is the real definition of Chinese Martial Arts. Kung Fu means ”work and time” and has been used to describe Wushu because of the time and work needed to achieve superior skill. This program is suitable for children, teens, and young adults. WHY CHOOSE WUSHU? Wushu is very exciting to watch fun to learn, and challenging to practice. Wushu training helps develop strength, speed coordination, concentraion, and flexibility. Students are also taught how to cooperate, how to make friends and avoid making enemies, how to resolve conflict in a positive way, and how to channel aggression into a healthy outlet. Students learn the skills necessary for survival in our current society: self-defense, self-control, and self-respect. The program is beneficial to all young people-from the outgoing child who wishes to become the next martial arts superstar to the quiet youth who needs more self-confidence. Students learn the physical and mental tools that help them succeed in life and achieve their dreams. SHENANDOAH WUSHU The wushu program's main purpose is to promote the sport of wushu through physical conditioning, self defense techniques, and traditional training methods, while focusing also on teaching the moral character building that is inherent in martial arts. Our aim is to create better students, better citizens, and most importantly, better communities. WUSHU TRAINING PROGRAM Training places major emphasis on basic techniques, self-defense, and two-person work. Barehand forms and weapons routines are a series of movements representative of the wide range of skills necessary for self-defense. Styles include northern longfist (changquan), southern (nanquan), baijiquan, and preying mantis. Basics • fundamental stances • hand techniques • kicking techniques Weapons • broadsword, Northern and Southern • staff, Northern and Southern • advanced: spear, straight sword, flexible weapons, others Progression of belt levels in • empty-hand forms • simple self-defense techniques • intermediate and advanced techniques • two-person sets Sparring is a type of training appropriate to advanced students. The instructor makes the decision as to when a student is sufficiently prepared for sparring. Students are expected to be respectful of each others and of the instructor at all times. Partner work and training in reaction skills represent an opportunity to learn, not a chance to show off. Skill development and safety for students are our primary considerations.
